Chemistry and computers. Mr. Parker's students exemplify the digital generation. Thanks to Slocum ISD's new BYOD (Bring Your Own Device-Technology) program students in Mr. Parker's chemistry class are using technology to enhance their knowledge of science. Across the campus this is a scene that plays out in most of the classrooms. Teachers and students have done a great job of adopting and adapting to the use of computers in the classroom. Slocum ISD would like to thank their board of trustees that made this possible, without their forward thinking none of this would have came to fruition.
The Slocum Senior Class of 2013 had a meeting on October 5, 2012 to vote for the officers of their class, the class flower, the class motto, and the class t-shirts. The results for the officers are as follows: President– Anna Bishop, Vice President– Baylor Young, Secretary– Amanda Yates, and Treasurer– Jennifer Jones. They came to an agreement on their class flower which will be the yellow rose. Their class motto is “Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you've imagined.” – Henry David Thoreau. On October 12, 2013, Balfour comes to Slocum to take the senior's cap and gown pictures and order invitations. Balfour then returns on October 26, 2013 to pick up the payments for the cap and gowns and invitations. The class is selling soft drinks as a fund raiser for project graduation.
Congratulations to Mr. Oscar Vasquez, an employee of SISD, for training, competing with, and winning two Champion of Champions Peruvian Horse Shows this year. Erica Vasquez, a 3rd grade student at Slocum Elementary, wrote that her "dad trains his horses and takes them once a year to College Station, Fort Worth, and states such as Louisiana, Florida, and Oklahoma." She is very proud of her father.
